Maryland has a long and rich history of high school rugby. From the 1970s thru the 1990s, Maryland and D.C. boys teams competed along with Virginia high schools and clubs in the Potomac Rugby Union. In 2008 Rugby Virginia was formed and created a state based competition format for youth and high school aged teams in Virginia. In Maryland, the MIAA gave sanction to varsity rugby and MAVRC was formed by other varsity, school-based programs in the DC metro area. The MD U19 clubs would also form their own conference. Girls high school rugby has grown at a slower rate but is slowly building throughout the state as well.
