Youth rugby in Maryland officially started in with 4 clubs in 1998, with participants from DC, MD and VA playing in the Potomac Rugby Union Youth League. By 2006-07 the league had grown exponentially to dozens of teams playing in multiple age grades. This growth allowed the league to create geographic divisions and the Virginia programs were split from DC and Maryland. Since the split, both the Maryland and Virginia leagues have continued their growth.
The Maryland and DC teams retained the PRUYL moniker until 2014 when all these teams began playing as members of Rugby Maryland. Some of these clubs are sponsored by community youth sports organizations, by municipal parks and recreation departments and/or by senior rugby clubs. Rugby Maryland welcomes any new club.
